Verse from Psalm

“耶和华啊!求你使我知道我的结局,我的寿数有多少,使我知道我的生命多么短促。 世人来来往往只是幻影,他们忙乱也是虚空;积聚财物, 却不知道谁要来收取。主啊!现在我还等候甚么呢? 我的指望在乎你. (诗篇 39:4, 6, 7)

“Show me, Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is. “Surely everyone goes around like a mere phantom; in vain they rush about, heaping up wealth without knowing whose it will finally be. “But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you. (Psalm 39:4, 6, 7)

Lord, we know that our life on this earth is so short compared to eternity. Bless us, fill us, use us to tell of Your love and goodness as much we can and for as long as we can until we see You. Amen.

Verse from Psalms

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

What freedom lies with all who choose to live for God each day!
But chains of bondage shackle those
Who choose some other way.

Verse from Mark

Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you your transgressions. (Mark 11:25)

While forgiving others is never easy, God has not only commanded us to do it, he has also given us his Son as an example of forgiveness

Verse from Joshua

Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenant, which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied, they have put them with their own possessions. That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their backs and run because they have been made liable to destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction. (Joshua 7:11, 12)

A winning strategy for our daily battles: confessing our sin and living in the power that God provides.

Verse from John

“ 神爱世人,甚至把他的独生子赐给他们,叫一切信他的,不至灭亡,反得永生。 因为 神差他的儿子到世上来,不是要定世人的罪,而是要使世人借着他得救。
(约翰福音 3:16, 17)

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Verse from Luke

For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.
(Luke 12:23)

In the rush of the holiday season and the grab at getting and giving gifts, it is very important to remember that life is much more than even the most basic things we think we need. If we lose sight of God, his work and his will in our lives, then what do we have? Not much and it won't last long! My prayer for you, and for me, during this holiday season is that we are reminded of what is most important, most valuable, and most enduring.

Verse from Jeremiah

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord , “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
(Jeremiah 29:11)

Keep Hugging‏

Having a "tender heart" for people has its risks.
Without exception, some people will reject you and let you down.

When you read the Bible, it's the story of God and Jesus.
Think about it and the rejection They received.

As a pastor of a church and the writer of MountainWings, I reach
out to a lot of people. I don't receive a salary or any
monetary compensation at the church. I do it for the love of
God and the love of people.

MountainWings is the same.
Many are appreciative, but most take it for granted.
Thus is the path of the servant, understand this.

Many people join MountainWings each day, yet there are others
who leave daily. Sometimes those who leave write very nasty
comments giving all types of reasons with all types of
misconceptions or correct conceptions.

I am often tempted to email them back to either explain or just
vent. I will tell you what God told me.

"Let them go and waste no time nor effort, spend all of your
energy on those who remain and freely accept what you give."

You will always have those who reject hugs, who reject love,
who reject compassion, who reject the good that you do.

Parents will have children who reject them,
no matter how hard they try.

Teachers will have students who reject them,
no matter how hard they try.

Good Samaritans will have those whom they try to help reject
them.

Husbands will have wives and wives will have husbands who reject
them, no matter how hard they try.

God made a great sacrifice, and yet most of the world rejected
His sacrifice then and now.

Your situation is not unusual; it is the path of the servant.

Don't let those who don't appreciate what you are trying to do
discourage you.

I often say before each sermon, before each issue of
MountainWings, if this can help just one person, it's worth it.
Yes, I know some will reject it but this may not be meant for
everyone, it's special.

Even though there are those who have and will continue to reject
your hugs, there is one waiting, in desperate need of your hug.
Your hug may save their life and world.

Don't let people discourage you. Keep hugging, keep loving,
keep giving, it is the way of the servant.

(Mark 10:43-45 NIV) "Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to
become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants
to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did
not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a
ransom for many."

Pleasant words are a honeycomb, Sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

Verse from Deuteronomy

Observe therefore all the commands I am giving you today, so that you may have the strength to go in and take over the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, (Deuteronomy 11:8)

“所以你们要遵守我今日吩咐你的一切诫命,使你们坚强起来,可以进去得着你们将要过去得的那地,
(申命记 11:8)

God's desire that we obey his will is not arbitrary, impulsive, or demanding. He simply wants us to reflect his character, find his blessings, and receive his strength. Let's not look at obedience merely as something we must do, but as a blessing we get to discover.

Verse from Proverbs

My son, do not reject the discipline of the Lord Or loathe His reproof, For whom The Lord loves He reproves, Even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights. (Proverbs 3:11, 12)

Verse from 1 Timothy

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.
(1 Timothy 6:17, 18)

Our natural tendency is to grasp what we have instead of freely giving to those in need. The challenge of riches is living with thankful hearts to God and open hands to others.

Verse from 1 John

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever. (1 John 2:15-17)

Ephesians 2: Made Alive in Christ

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. (Ephesians 2:1-2)

The Lord's Prayer (verses from Matthew)

不叫我们遇见试探;

"Pray, then, in this way:
Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Loch Ness

An atheist was spending a quiet day fishing when suddenly his
boat was attacked by the Loch Ness monster. In one easy flip,
the beast tossed him and his boat high into the air. Then it
opened its mouth to swallow both.

As the man sailed head over heels, he cried out, "Oh, my God!
Please help me!"

At once, the ferocious attack scene froze in place, and as the
atheist hung in mid-air, a booming voice came down from the
clouds, "I thought you didn't believe in Me!"

"Come on God, give me a break!!" the man pleaded. "Two minutes
ago I didn't believe in the Loch Ness monster either!"

from The Mountain:
There comes a time in everyone's life when they will face a
monster in some form. In that moment, you realize that you need
help beyond that which logic can provide.

Verse from 2 Corinthians

That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:10)
As we pour out our hearts to God, let’s be even more concerned with seeking His will than we are with receiving the answer we want. That’s where the grace and the strength come from.

The Next Door Neighbor

I'm thankful today for good neighbors. I've never met one like
ours. My car broke down last spring. All summer, we tried to get
it fixed but after 300k miles and two accidents, it gave up.

James had no way to work, so our neighbor insisted we use his
spare van, which he used to haul supplies or as a 'loaner' for
family, until we could save the down payment on a replacement.

With trying to catch up our mortgage and medical bills, it took
six months. The day we picked up the car, James took the van
keys to our neighbor and offered to pay whatever we could for
using his van so very long (we had of course paid for all the
gas and maintenance).

The neighbor accepted only our thanks, he refused to take a dime.

You want to see some Christian charity? Yeah, his name's Tom,

he's next door.

Prayer

Holy God, I ask that you bless all those everywhere who are trying to cross cultural, linguistic, and nationalistic barriers to share the grace of Jesus with those who do not know you and do not honor your Son as Lord. Father, I pray that You led us and push us to break through racial hatred and cultural ignorance. Help us to be the kind of people who rejoice and praise God for every barrier that falls that divides people. Help us to press on until the triumphant promise of the Gospel is fulfilled:
There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. (Galatians 3:28)

Who's Your Daddy?

A number of years ago a seminary professor was vacationing with
his wife in Gatlinburg, Tennessee where they were eating
breakfast at a little restaurant, hoping to enjoy a quiet family
meal.

While they were waiting for their food, they noticed a
distinguished looking, white-haired man moving from table to
table visiting with the guests. The professor leaned over and
whispered to his wife:

"I hope he doesn't come over here." But sure enough, the man
did come over to their table.

"Where are you folks from?" he asked in a friendly voice.

"Oklahoma," they answered.

"Great to have you here in Tennessee," the stranger said.
"What do you do for a living?"

"I teach at a seminary," he replied.

"Oh, you teach preachers how to preach? Well, I've got a really
great story for you." And with that, the gentleman pulled up a
chair and sat down at the table with the couple.

"See that mountain over there?" (pointing out the restaurant
window). Not far from the base of that mountain, there was a
boy born to an unwed mother. He had a hard time growing up,
because every place he went, he was always asked the same
question:

'Hey boy, Who's your daddy?'

Whether he was at school, in the grocery store or drug store,
people would ask the same question, "Who's your daddy?"
He would hide at recess and lunchtime from other students.
He would avoid going in to stores because that question hurt him
so bad.

When he was about 12 years old, a new preacher came to his
church. He would always go in late and slip out early to avoid
hearing the question, "Who's your daddy?" But one day, the
new preacher said the benediction so fast he got caught and
had to walk out with the crowd.

Just about the time he got to the back door, the new preacher
not knowing anything about him, put his hand on his shoulder and
asked him,

"Son, who's your daddy?"

The whole church got deathly quiet. He could feel every eye in
the church looking at him. By now, everyone knew the answer to
the question, 'Who's your daddy?'

This new preacher, though, sensed the situation around him and
using discernment that only the Holy Spirit could give, said the
following to that scared little boy...

'Wait a minute!' he said, 'I know who you are. I see the family
resemblance now. You are a child of God.'

With that he patted the boy on his shoulder and said:

'Boy, you've got a great inheritance. Go and claim it.'

With that, the boy smiled for the first time in a long time
and walked out the door a changed person. He was never the same
again. Whenever anybody asked him, 'Who's your Daddy?' he'd
just tell them,

'I'm a Child of God.'

The distinguished gentleman got up from the table and said,
"Isn't that a great story?"

The professor responded that it really was a great story!
As the man turned to leave, he said,

"You know, if that new preacher hadn't told me that I was one of
God's children, I probably never would have amounted to
anything!" And he walked away.

The seminary professor and his wife were stunned.
He called the waitress over and asked her,

"Do you know who that man was who just left who was sitting at
our table?" The waitress grinned and said,

"Of course. Everybody here knows him. That's Ben Hooper.
He's the former governor of Tennessee!"

There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood,
a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.
(Proverbs 6:16-19)

Wings of the Dawn

Verse from Psalms

我坐下,我起来,你都晓得;
我行路,我躺卧,你都细察;
我若升到天上,你在那里;
你的手必引导我;
O L ORD , You have searched me and known me.
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
You understand my thought from afar.
You scrutinize my path and my lying down,
And are intimately acquainted with all my ways.
Even before there is a word on my tongue,
Behold, O LORD,
You know it all. You have enclosed me behind and before, And laid Your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
It is too high, I cannot attain to it. Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there.
If I take the wings of the dawn,
If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea,
Even there Your hand will lead me, And Your right hand will lay hold of me.
(Psalms 139:1-10)

Gratitude

Years ago I was in a devastating accident.

I am still in recovery daily.

The thing that has pulled me through it all has been having an
Attitude of Gratitude.

When I read the issue "Why Me," I wanted to share with you what
I have learned to do for myself each and every day.

To keep an Attitude of Gratitude at all times,
I have learned to have a "Gratitude Prayer" once a day.

I have this prayer just before laying down for the night.

I do nothing in it but pray my thankfulness for things that I am
grateful for on that particular day.

When I first started this practice, my prayers were very short.

As the years have passed, they have become a time of peace each
day that I look forward to as I share with my Father in Heaven
all the bounty He has given me that day.

I acknowledge His hand in the giving of that bounty.

My world is beautiful because of constant gratitude.

I have made it such a part of my life, that at times during the
day when something happens, I raise my eyes to Heaven and say
"Thank you, God."

My change in taking charge of my life in this manner has indeed
been a gift, for I have a constant smile, inside and out,
by merely looking at the world differently.

Verse from Psalms

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you—
the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. (Psalm 121:1-8)

Sandy Our Hope Is Strong

You came in a force of power,
Waves high upon the land.
Many states went into darkness,
Broadway neon is no more.
Subway under water,
Streets and cars float away.
Homes are a pile of rubble,
But Sandy, our hope is strong.

Boardwalk a pile of wood,
Rock-a-by and no one sleeps.
New Jersey shore awash in mud,
Flooding everywhere abounds.
Landscape looks like Armageddon
A wasteland of memories lost.
Neighborhoods lost to fire and water,
Sandy look what you have done!

But, God has sent us saving angels,
Red Cross, Fire and Police have come.
EMT's have saved the babies,
Blankets for the cold and lost.
Pets are saved and little children,
People work together as one.
You may have destroyed what we owned,
But Sandy, our hope is strong.

People everywhere work together,
To help the helpless and rebuild.
Money is raised and awareness,
Food and water is divinely sent.
People may have lost possessions,
Homes and businesses are ruined.
Yet, home is in the heart not bricks,
And Sandy, our hope is strong.

Verse from 1 Corinthians

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. (1 Corinthians 13:4-7)

Sometimes We Need To Fall Apart

We don't always have to be strong.

Sometimes our strength is expressed in being vulnerable.

Sometimes we need to fall apart to regroup and stay on track.

We all have days when we cannot push any harder,
cannot hold back self-doubt,
cannot stop focusing on fear,
cannot be strong.

There are days when we cannot focus on being responsible.
Sometimes we cry in front of people.
We expose our tiredness, irritability, or anger.
Those days are okay.

Part of taking care of ourselves means we give ourselves
permission to "fall apart" when we need to.
We do not need to be perpetual towers of strength.

We ARE strong.

We have proven that our strength will continue if we allow us
the courage to feel scared, weak, and vulnerable when we need
to experience those feelings.

Today, help me to know that it is okay
to allow myself to be human.

Help me not to feel guilty or punish myself
when I need to "fall apart."

On The Mountain

My wife asked me to pick up a prescription at the store for her
tonight. She has a cough and we are getting ready to go on a
vacation for four days. I left work after seven and headed to
the store.

It was crowded at the pharmacy counter. Both pharmacists looked
harried and tired after a long day and each customer in the
makeshift line didn't look any fresher. I stood there about five
minutes in a line that really was no line at all.

My wife's prescription had been called in but most of the folk
waiting in line had their prescriptions called in. There is
nothing to try your patience like waiting in a seemingly slow
moving line.

I started smiling.

Why? I can't exactly answer that. I just did.

I started thinking.

First of all, I wasn't sick. Not that I was gloating or being
condescending, I just realized that every person getting
medicine was more than likely sick with something. It was a
blessing just to be well.

Secondly, I wasn't in a hurry. How many times do we hurry up and
wait? We rush rush rush when we really don't need to. If a
person in front of us takes more than three seconds to go when
the light turns green, we get upset. We rush home to relax and
have to spend an hour trying to unwind from the rushing that
saved us two minutes.

Well, I just relaxed while standing in line.

So I smiled.

Third, I felt the mountaintop.

I realized all over again (each situation in life grants you the
opportunity) that the mountaintop is really not a physical
place, it is a state of mind. When Martin Luther King Jr. said,
"I've been to the mountaintop" he wasn't talking about an actual
mountain. He was in the midst of struggle and rocks and hate
mail and jail. He was talking about a state of mind.

He could stand on the mountain even in the midst of struggle.
He could stand on the mountain even with rocks thrown at him.
He could stand on the mountain with venomous calls and hate mail
daily. He could even stand on the mountain - sitting in jail.

So I smiled.

My smile got so big and obvious that the lady behind the counter
beckoned to me and said, "what's the name?" "Bronner" I replied.
She immediately went and got the prescription even though
everyone else was there before me. She then brought the lady's
prescription IN FRONT of me.

The lady in front of me turned to me and said, "being around you
must have brought me favor." She recognized that she had been
there for a long time before I got there and still had not been
able to get her prescription and suddenly both of us had our
prescriptions ahead of the crowd. I knew she had been there a
long time because I had heard her mumbling angrily in line. She
sensed something out of the ordinary had happened.

I tell you this to remind you that life will always present to
you the opportunity for the mountain or the valley. Always
understand that among animals and man far more live in the
valley than on the mountain and you do have a choice, even if
you feel you are sitting in jail.

And there really may be someone throwing rocks at you.

It wasn't so much that the pharmacist saw me smiling or
recognized me. She saw me standing in a place where the crowd
wasn't. She saw the mountain.

Even if they are throwing rocks, remember,
The higher you are on the mountain
The harder it is to get hit.

Now just close your eyes and feel the cool fresh wind of the
mountain

And don't forget to smile.

FOUR WORDS

A king called all of his wise men and counselors together for a
meeting. He addressed them and said, "I want you to go and
think, read, and research. Consult the wisest and most learned
men in the land. Spare no expense."

"I want you to find the ONE statement that will get me through

all situations in life. Whether I am on top of the world or in
the pits, find that statement."

"Find me a MountainWings Moment statement."

"I don't want to learn long and complicated philosophies.

I want one simple statement. Find it or write it; I don't care,
just bring me the statement."

The men left and consulted for months.

They finally returned and handed the King a scroll.

The King unrolled the scroll. On it was written four words.

"THIS TOO SHALL PASS"

That was it.

The wise men explained.

When you are on top of the world, that is but a fleeting

moment, things change, always remember, this too shall pass.

When you are in the pits, all nights are followed by day, at

your lowest moments remember also, this too shall pass.

All external circumstances and material things change.

No matter what your circumstances, remember,

THIS TOO SHALL PASS!

The wise men reminded the great King that this would get him

through his earthly things but the truly wise knew there were
things beyond this earth and life. . .

Things that were eternal.

True wisdom they reminded the King was in the ability to

recognize the fleeting temporal things of the material world
from the truly eternal things.

O Great King they said, "Most of the things that you worry or

gloat about are temporary and our four words apply."

For most of your situations. . .

THIS TOO SHALL PASS!

He is our Rock!

I learnt something today from klove, a Christian radio.. When things get tough n there is no way out, look to God up there for He is greater than all problems! We can rest assured that nothing is bigger than God!

Verse from Ephesians

And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession—to the praise of his glory. One

ONE is the smallest whole number, yet the most significant.

We often think of the big numbers; hundreds, thousands, and
millions. Life really boils down to ONE.

One aspect of ONE, I am divinely commanded to help at least ONE
person, each day.

That does two things.

First, it helps the other person. Whether it is just a
compliment, a dollar given to a homeless person, or even
something so small as holding the door open for someone, it is
help. It helps ease the burden of life for someone.

Second, it makes me focus on someone other than myself.

This world is geared to make us self-centered.
After all, we have enough stuff of our own to deal with without
trying to solve someone else's problems.

We don't have enough money for us so we focus on the two outside
letters of "money" instead on the three inside letters.
We don't have enough time for us.
We don't have enough joy, peace, and happiness for us.
We need our relationships improved.
We need a compliment and an uplift.

We need help.

We often don't have time to think of helping someone else.

There is a funny thing about helping some"one" else.
When you are helping someone else, for that moment in time,
your own problems are diminished.

I will tell you to do as I try to do,

"Help someone every day."

Jesus said, "I tell you there is more joy in heaven over ONE
sinner who changes his heart and life, than over ninety-nine
good people who don't need to change." (Luke 15:7 NCV)

ONE

Help ONE person today.

Thank you Father in heaven

Father in heaven, forgive me for the times I forgot about the blessings you have given me, forgot about what you have done for me and thank you Father, thank you all everything that you have done for me, for the countless blessings that you have given me, no matter how small it may seem, as it is still a blessing from you, for loving me before I even know you, for providing me this eternal salvation, for being there for u in all situations, for simply loving me and never giving up on me no matter how many times I sinned against you, for always welcoming me back with open arms and I am eternally grateful for your everlasting love for me. Thank you for being my God, Lord, Father, brother, friend, savior, King and my creator! Praise be to You, forever! Amen!

when i say im a christian...

When I say that 'I am a Christian', I am not shouting that 'I am clean living.   I'm whispering 'I was lost, but now I'm found and forgiven.'

When I say 'I am a Christian', I don't speak of this with pride.   I'm confessing that I stumble and need Christ to be my guide.

When I say 'I am a Christian', I'm not trying to be strong.  I'm professing that I'm weak and need His strength to carry on.

When I say 'I am a Christian', I'm not bragging of success.  I'm admitting I have failed and need God to clean my mess.

When I say 'I am a Christian', I'm not claiming to be perfect.  My flaws are far too visible, but God believes I am worth it.

When I say 'I am a Christian', I still feel the sting of pain.  I have my share of heartaches, so I call upon His name.

When I say 'I am a Christian', I'm not holier than thou, I'm just a simple sinner who received God's good grace, somehow!

Hymn : When We See Christ

It will be worth it all, when we see Jesus;
Life’s trials will seem so small when we see Christ;
One glimpse of His dear face, all sorrow will erase;
So bravely run the race, till we see Christ!

THE WRONG FUNERAL

Consumed by my loss, I didn't notice the hardness of the pew where I sat.  I was at the funeral of my dearest friend - my mother.  She finally had lost her long battle with cancer. The hurt was so intense; I found it hard to breathe at times. Always supportive, Mother clapped loudest at my school plays, held a box of tissues while listening to my first heartbreak, comforted me at my father's death, encouraged me in college, and prayed for me my entire life.  When mother's illness was diagnosed, my sister had a new baby and my brother had recently married his childhood sweetheart, so it fell on me, the 27-year-old middle female child without entanglements, to take care of her.  I counted it an honor.

"What now, Lord?" I asked sitting in church. My life stretched out before me as an empty abyss. My brother sat stoically with his face toward the cross while clutching his wife's hand.   My sister sat slumped against her husband's shoulder, his arms around her as she cradled their child.  All so deeply grieving, no one noticed I sat alone. My place had been with our mother, preparing her meals, helping her walk, taking her to the doctor, seeing to her medication, reading the Bible together.  Now she was with the Lord. My work was finished, and I was alone. I heard a door open and slam shut at the back of the church.  Quick footsteps hurried along the carpeted floor.

An exasperated young man looked around briefly and then sat next to me. He folded his hands and placed them on his lap.  His eyes were brimming with tears.  He began to sniffle. "I'm late," he explained, though no explanation was necessary.  After several eulogies, he leaned over and commented, "Why do they keep calling Mary by the name of 'Margaret?'"

"Because, that was her name, Margaret. Never Mary, no one called her 'Mary,'" I whispered.  I wondered why this person couldn't have sat on the other side of the church.  He interrupted my grieving with his tears and fidgeting.  Who was this stranger anyway?

"No, that isn't correct," he insisted, as several people glanced over at us whispering, "her name is Mary, Mary Peters."

"That isn't who this is."

"Isn't this the Lutheran church?"

No, the Lutheran church is across the street."

"Oh."

"I believe you're at the wrong funeral, Sir."

The solemnness of the occasion mixed with the realization of the man's mistake bubbled up inside me and came out as laughter.  I cupped my hands over my face, hoping it would be interpreted as sobs. The creaking pew gave me away.  Sharp looks from other mourners only made the situation seem more hilarious.  I peeked at the bewildered, misguided man seated beside me.  He was laughing too, as he glanced around, deciding it was too late for an uneventful exit.

I imagined Mother laughing.  At the final "Amen," we darted out a door and into the parking lot.

"I do believe we'll be the talk of the town," he smiled. He said his name was Rick and since he had missed his aunt's funeral, asked me out for a cup of coffee.

That afternoon began a lifelong journey for me with this man who attended the wrong funeral, but was in the right place. A year after our meeting, we were married at a country church where he was the assistant pastor.  This time we both arrived at the same church, right on time.

In my time of sorrow, God gave me laughter. In place of loneliness, God gave me love.  This past June, we celebrated our twenty-second wedding anniversary.  Whenever anyone asks us how we met, Rick tells them, "Her mother and my Aunt Mary introduced us, and it's truly a match made in heaven."

REMEMBER, God doesn't make mistakes. He puts us where we are supposed to be.

Comfort, yes, comfort My people! —Isaiah 40:1

On February 10, 1675, 50 colonial families in Lancaster, Massachusetts, feared possible Native American raids. Joseph Rowlandson, the Puritan minister of the village, was in Boston pleading with the government for protection, while Mary, his wife, stayed behind with their children. At sunrise, the settlers were attacked. After some of the settlers were killed, Mary and other survivors were taken captive.

Mary experienced both kindness and cruelty from her captors. The Native Americans, aware of the religious nature of the settlers, gave her a Bible they had confiscated. Later she would write in her memoirs about God’s “goodness in bringing to my hand so many comfortable and suitable Scriptures in my distress.” God’s Word was her great comfort until she was ransomed by the colonists on May 2.

As the nation of Judah waited to be taken into captivity by a foreign power (Isa. 39:5-7), the despair of its people must have been great. But even in that dreadful anticipation, God’s words brought comfort: “The word of the Lord which you have spoken is good!” (v.8).

Have you been taken captive by circumstances beyond your control? If so, read and meditate on the Word. And experience God’s comfort.

Upon Thy Word I rest, so strong, so sure;
So full of comfort blest, so sweet, so pure,
Thy Word that changest not, that faileth never!
My King, I rest upon Thy Word forever. —Havergal

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. —Romans 5:8

still answers

A young man had been to Wednesday night Bible study.
The pastor had shared about listening to God and obeying the
Lord's voice.

The young man couldn't help but wonder,

"Does God still speak to people?"

After service, he went out with some friends for coffee and pie
and they discussed the message. Several different ones talked
about how God had led them in different ways.

It was about ten o'clock when the young man started driving
home. Sitting in his car, he just began to pray,
"God, if you still speak to people, speak to me. I will listen.
I will do my best to obey."

As he drove down the main street of his town, he had the
strangest thought to stop and buy a gallon of milk. He shook
his head and said out loud,

"God is that you?" He didn't get a reply and started on toward
home. But again, the thought, "buy a gallon of milk."

The young man thought about Samuel and how he didn't recognize
the voice of God, and how little Samuel ran to Eli.
"Okay, God, in case that is you, I will buy the milk."

It didn't seem like too hard a test of obedience. He could
always use the milk.

He stopped and purchased the gallon of milk and started off
toward home. As he passed Seventh Street, he again felt the
urge, "Turn down that street."

"This is crazy," he thought and drove on past the intersection.
Again, he felt that he should turn down Seventh Street. At the
next intersection, he turned back and headed down Seventh.
Half jokingly, he said out loud, "Okay, God I will."

He drove several blocks when suddenly, he felt like he should
stop. He pulled over to the curb and looked around. He was in
a semi-commercial area of town. It wasn't the best, but it
wasn't the worst of neighborhoods either.

The businesses were closed and most of the houses looked dark
like the people were already in bed. Again, he sensed
something, "Go and give the milk to the people in the house
across the street." The young man looked at the house. It was
dark and it looked like the people were either gone or they were
already asleep.

He started to open the door and then sat back in the car seat.
"Lord, this is insane. Those people are asleep and if I wake
them up, they are going to be mad and I will look stupid."
Again, he felt like he should go and give them the milk.

Finally, he opened the door. "Okay God, if this is you, I will
go to the door and I will give them the milk. If you want me to
look like a crazy person, okay. I want to be obedient. I guess
that will count for something, but if they don't answer right
away, I am out of here."

He walked across the street and rang the bell. He could hear
some noise inside. A man's voice yelled out, "Who is it?
What do you want?"

Then the door opened before the young man could get away.
The man was standing there in his jeans and a t-shirt.
He looked like he just got out of bed. He had a strange look on
his face, and he didn't seem too happy to have a stranger
standing on his doorstep.

"What is it?" The young man thrust out the gallon of milk.
"Here I brought this to you."

The man took the milk and rushed down the hallway, speaking
loudly in Spanish. Then from down the hall came a woman
carrying the milk toward the kitchen. The man was following her
holding a baby.

The baby was crying. The man had tears streaming down his face.
The man began speaking and half-crying, "We were just praying.
We had some big bills this month and we ran out of money.
We didn't have any milk for our baby. I was just praying and
asking God to show me how to get some milk."

His wife in the kitchen yelled out, "I asked him to send an
Angel with some milk. Are you an Angel?"

The young man reached into his wallet and pulled out all the
money he had on him and put it in the man's hand. He turned and
walked back toward his car and the tears were streaming down his
face.

He knew that God still answers prayers.

"Stop telling God how big your storm is.
Instead, tell the storm how big your God is!"

The bargain

During one of the many battles of the era, a young soldier found himself and his army being soundly defeated by the enemy.
He and his comrades hastily retreated from the battlefield in defeat, running away in fear of their very lives.
The enemy gave chase. The young man ran hard and fast, full of fear and desperation, and soon found himself cut off from his comrades. The soldier eventually came upon a rocky ledge containing a cave.
Knowing the enemy was close behind, and that he was exhausted from the chase, he chose to hide there. After he crawled in, he fell to his face in the darkness, desperately crying to God to save him and protect him from his enemies. He made a bargain with God. He promised that if God saved him, he would serve Him for the remainder of his days.
When he looked up from his despairing plea for help, he saw a spider beginning to weave its web at the entrance to the cave.
As he watched the delicate threads being slowly drawn across the mouth of the cave, the young soldier pondered its irony.
He thought, "I asked God for protection and deliverance, and He sent me a spider instead. How can a spider save me?"
His heart was hardened, knowing the enemy would soon discover his hiding place and kill him. Soon he did hear the sound of his enemies, who were now scouring the area looking for those in hiding.
One soldier with a gun slowly walked up to the cave's entrance.
As the young man crouched in the darkness, hoping to surprise the enemy in a last-minute desperate attempt to save his own life, he felt his heart pounding wildly out of control.
As the enemy cautiously moved forward to enter the cave, he came upon the spider's web, which by now was completely strung across the opening. He backed away and called out to a comrade,
"There can't be anyone in here. They would have had to break this spider's web to enter the cave. Let's move on."
Years later, this young man, who made good his promise by becoming a preacher and evangelist, wrote about that ordeal.
What he observed has stood by me in times of trouble, especially during those times when everything seemed impossible:
"Where God is, a spider's web is as a stone wall.
Where God is not, a stone wall is as a spider's web."
